Life of a Writer Mom Column May 2002 Column Thoughts on Retirement Okay I want to know how you do it? I read recently that Stephen King was going to retire and the first question that popped into my mind is, "How does one retire from writing?" I am one of those writers who has been writing since I could hold a pen. Stories, poems, essays and whatever else came to mind. I still do. Writing is as natural to me as breathing. I mean we all have days when we want to throw the pen in so to speak. Days when our characters won't do what we want them to and our words sit like stone tombs upon the computer screen. The days we crumple up our fiftieth attempt at beginning a chapter and throw it in the trash. We vow to forget the book idea and get a real job. Then we look around at the living room scattered with toys, think of the load of wash that needs to be put in and watch as our children romp around the house completely oblivious to everything except the hide and seek game their involved in. That's when we realize we do have a real job. Every writing parent has those days. But to never pick a pen and paper up again? I don't think for me at least that's possible. When I finish my current writing project, I put down my pen, feeling very satisfied, thinking, "There that's it, I'm done!" Within a day though, my mind starts working and a character finds me and starts begging for me to tell his story. Finally when the idea keeps nagging at me and won't let me go I decide to sit down after supper and work on it for a couple of minutes, to see where this germ of an idea leads. Just for fun you understand. Next thing I know it's three hours later, and well you can guess the rest! Retire from writing? Possibly. After I finish my next story, and my next, and my next...
