Life of a Writer Mom Column June 2002 Column One of the Many Challenges of Working At
Home One of the biggest battles I have writing at home, isn't with the computer, characters or even writer's block. It's with the electrical food containment device in the kitchen. You guessed it the refrigerator. It usually starts in the morning while I delve into the refrigerator for some eggs. Once they're cooked, I head to my computer to check my e-mail. The refrigerator as I walk by just hums happily, it knows I'll be back. Once everyone's off to school and work I sit back down in my office, usually with a plate full of cream cheese crackers. They help me organize after all. I settle into writing a chapter of my current book. As my fingers fly, I get more and more into what's happening . I mean this is getting really exciting! I want to know how it ends. Maybe a cream cheese bar will help me type faster, so I give it a try. Soon I look at the clock and realize it's time to leave to pick up the two pre-schoolers. Once back, I dive into the refrigerator for the left-over macaroni and cheese and make tuna sandwiches on the side. It's quick and I'm busy. After lunch we all have a chocolate chip cookie, while I sit on the couch and read to my two sons. We play for a while and then they decide they want to watch a video as it's threatening to rain outside. I sit back down at my computer to work and discover, to my horror, I'm writer blocked. That's when I hear the siren's song of the chocolate pudding stored in my friend, the refrigerator. Maybe it will help me clear the writer's block after all. I debate for a second. It isn't raining yet and maybe a walk would produce the same results. But, I reason, a walk takes time and hey I'm supposed to be working here! I share the pudding with my sons and sit back down. The words flow easily now and before I know it, it's 3 p.m. and my daughter strolls through the door from school. You remember her, she's the eleven year old on a growth spurt, who eats everything in sight. "Hey Mom," she calls from the kitchen, "I'm getting a snack, you want something?" Well, I don't want to be rude after all. Now I know I wouldn't have the challenge of the refrigerator, if I worked outside the home. In fact I'd have a lot less challenges. But I'd miss a lot more. A lot more than I care to give up, like the joy of following my passion, watching my kids grow, and eating that last piece of leftover double fudge cake calling for me in the fridge right now.
