Life of a Writer Mom Column

October 2002 Column

All My Children
by Carla Charter

Well, it’s that time of year again. The back to school rush is over. The school forms are all filled out, signed and returned. Everyone’s settling back into a routine, me included.

With my youngest now in pre-school, my middle one in Kindergarten and my oldest in Junior High, I have four blissful mornings a week to write. So as I settle in with a cup of tea, the question I’ve been asked several times pops into my mind. Isn’t it lonely with no one around except your computer and notebook. Empty mornings all to yourself.

Yes and no. Yes, I, like every parent, have the twinge, the realization of how fast your children are growing. The amazement at the thought that soon they’ll be in school full-time. You know, with a fear in your heart, that much sooner then you want, you’ll be greeted with a “Hey, I’m home” rather than and enthusiastic pre-schooler yelling “Mommy” and running excitedly across the playground to give you a hug at the end of the day.

Yes I’ll miss those times. On the other hand, there’s my book. The characters in them, during school days, occupy my time and keep me busy. Far from lonely, I’m swept away to the world of Absalom and King Phillip into a world struggling with war, love and tolerance.

Sure, there are days, when like my children., my characters can be stubborn and recalcitrant. They refuse to move on the page and I just plod away. The minutes seem like hours and it seems it will never be time to pick up the youngest. Even on these days though I write.

Then there are the other days when the characters fairly dance from my fingers, through the keyboard, and onto my computer screen. The mornings on those days seem to fly by. It seems like I’ve just begun to write when it’s time to leave their world once again.

Yes, I miss the summer noises of slamming screen doors and giggling children in sprinklers. The sticky popsicle laced fingers and the excitement in their eyes when we decide to camp out.

But am I lonely? No, I think as I clack away on my keyboard. Never in a million years.
