Life of a Writer Mom Column January 2003 Column The Music In My Office Lately I seem to be noticing hold music when I call offices. Think about it, there’s classical, rock, and jazz. While you wait you sometimes even find yourself, humming, singing or tapping along. Then there’s the music in my office. I guess it would be considered more background music than hold music. It’s only one genre and almost anyone on the other end can join in. It’s early childhood. I do try to schedule interviews and then retreat to the bedroom phone when Samantha or my husband are available to watch the two youngest. Still occasionally the impromptu calls come in. While I talk to the person on the other end strains of “I Love You” or “Wheels On The Bus” come wafting through the background. The same music can turn quickly from background to hold music though. We’ve all as writers and parents done it. Can you hold for a moment please ( while I find a pen, while I turn the television down, while I break up the latest wrestling match between my sons...) Even my notes show evidence of these unplanned calls. In the middle of a page of notes you’ll see this message usually directed at my oldest child SHH!!!!! I AM ON THE PHONE FOR WORK!!!!!!!!!! More notes and then another desperation message YES, YOU MAY EACH HAVE A POPSICLE!!!!!!!! Another page of notes and then another S.O.S. to Samantha, GET THE POPSICLES AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER!!!!!!! Luckily though most people are understanding about the music in my office. As for my notes, I hold onto them. Years from now I’m sure I’ll remember with fondness the song of childhood that once danced through my home. Carla Charter is mom to Samantha (12), Halden (5), and Mathew (4).
