| Life of a Writer Mom Column March 2003 Column E-Mail-Less Say a R.I.P. for my computer. I'm not sure exactly what happened but somehow my hard drive disappeared. Whether the cause is my children or simply age, the hard drive is definitely among the missing. The computer is currently being looked at and I've got my fingers crossed. Meanwhile though, it feels strange not having my computer in the corner of the living room where it once covered my desk. Now there sits, well, just a desk. I can manage without the computer for a while. After all the area does have a cyber-cafe, a God send at times of crisis like this. What I miss is not the machine itself but one of it's wonderful features, e-mail. Although I can get e-mail at the cyber-cafe, I miss puttering over to my computer with my tea each morning and seeing what wonderful surprises await me. Almost like opening presents at Christmas. My husband tells me I'm going through e-mail withdrawal. Through my e-mail crisis though, I have discovered e-mail by phone. Now rather than being at the computer with my tea in the morning I have a phone in my ear in the morning. It works at the moment but it's not for me long-term. There's something about speaking on my feet or in this case replying on my feet that doesn't appeal to me. When I receive my e-mail on the computer, I treasure every word I read and relish the chance to mull over every word I write. Which I suppose, e-mail or not, is why I became a writer in the first place. Carla Charter is mom to Samantha (12), Halden (5), and Mathew (4).
