Life of a Writer Mom Column October 2003 Column On Finding My Desk by Carla Charter Tell me I'm not the only writer mom with this problem: At the beginning of the day I find my desk quite easily. It's one that could easily be seen on the back of a book jacket with a studious looking author glowing behind it. Morning's aren't the problem. It's the end of the day when I really have to search for it. I know it's there somewhere under the piles. Some of the piles are self-created. I'll admit, I'm not the neatest researcher. In a fit of passion to find jus the right word, I will sometimes leave the dictionary out to be put away later. Then there's the other stuff, left by the little gremlins I share my space with; better known as my children. There's Lego buildings emerging from the depths of the desk clutter. A toy keyboard for a child who wants to play along with Barney. Research papers belonging to my oldest who is working on her latest video project. There's the miscellaneous sneakers kicked off under the desk. And a recent addition, a now empty bowl of ice cream. Come on guys, what did I say about eating in my office???!!! Then there are the mounds of mysteriously appearing paper. They seem to just grow larger and multiply during the day. Bills, order forms and those ever popular permission slips. The paper may not seem important today, but just throw one out and watch what happens! Despite the mess and the time it takes to clear it, I do so dutifully each day. A clean desk somehow organizes my writer's mind and gets the creative juices flowing again. And I have the satisfaction of knowing it's neat and ready to work at---at least until tomorrow.
