Life of a Writer Mom Column November 2003 Column Writing, Writing, Anything but Writing by Carla Charter Ever notice that when you get into a writing slump, even the most mundane chores take on the greatest importance? Most write-from-home parents know the routine. All those little things that nag at you as you happily type away, suddenly become large and looming when the words dry up. For me it goes something like this: Restless and stuck on a piece of work, the wash suddenly begs to be done. It won't take long, I reason. After all it's only one load. With the wash started, I am just about to sit down and work through that bit of writer's block that I've been meaning to get to, when I get a craving for that homemade bread--the one that takes fussing over all day to come out right. With the bread rising, I ready myself to sit down with a pen and paper when I glance over to the closet--the one that spills its contents onto the living room floor every time I open it. It really needs to be straightened out--especially with the holidays coming. And somewhere between the wash and the bread baking and the closet cleaning, I uncover my muse once again. I grab a pen and notebook and start furiously scribbling away. And once again, nothing much matters except the words. Always the words. Carla Charter is mom to Samantha (12), Halden (5), and Mathew (4). In addition to being a mom, Carla is a freelance writer specializing in newspaper and magazine journalism. Among her publication credits are Woman's World, American Indian Report and New England Business Journal. Online she has been published in Scubasource.com and Military.com. She teaches creative writing courses at Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner, Ma. Recently her novel Across Lots has been serialized at http://www.newenglandwow.com.
