Life of a Writer Mom Column January 2004 Column Recharging the Pen by Carla Charter I stumbled across a little trick the other day—one that's made a world of difference in my writing. It was a Friday night to be exact. The type of Friday night a parent doesn't get too often, so she relishes it when she gets it. My oldest had gone off with her father to visit his sister, my two youngest (miraculously) fell asleep by 7 p.m. What's a mother to do? I knew what I should be doing. Writing. The same thing I'd been doing to the wee hours for most of the week. Then again I reasoned, how often does a mother get an opportunity like this? So I gave into a guilt ridden urge to put on my favorite sweat suit, grab a book, freshly chosen from the library, and curl up under the covers. I read several chapters of that book before I put it aside and gave into sleep. Nine luxurious hours of sleep. The next morning, rather than fretting over undone work, I found I was recharged with a new energy to tackle those writing projects. Since then, I've decided to do the sleeping and night off thing more often. A night off is good for us as parents and as writers. The muse is a lot more willing to settle down to work afterwards. And the pen indeed seems recharged. Carla Charter is mom to Samantha (12), Halden (5), and Mathew (4). In addition to being a mom, Carla is a freelance writer specializing in newspaper and magazine journalism. Among her publication credits are Woman's World, American Indian Report and New England Business Journal. Online she has been published in Scubasource.com and Military.com. She teaches creative writing courses at Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner, Ma. Recently her novel Across Lots has been serialized at http://www.newenglandwow.com. She may be reached at cjfreelancewriter@earthlink.net. |
