Life of a
Writer Mom Column
March 2004 Column
The Power of Words
by Carla Charter
For those of my readers who don't know it, I am a journalist as well as a
fiction writer. While covering a local meeting one night, a speaker made
several direct quotations from the Declaration of Independence.
Writing the article several hours later, I checked an actual copy of the
document to be sure I had the quotes exactly right. After checking the wording
though, I felt the urge to take a couple of minutes and
read the document from beginning to end.
Maybe it was the late hour or maybe it was the quotes cited earlier, but the
full force of Jefferson's words hit me. How wonderfully perfect the words
fit together and what sheer power they had. I thought back for a minute on
the impact those words had in changing the direction of history. What they
said and the great actions they put in motion.
It was a stark reminder of the power words, when put together in just the
right way. I looked with a totally fresh eye at what I was writing
and what I had written since. Will my writing be strong enough to last 200
years? And if it does, will it stir a person's emotions as much as
Jefferson's?
I've made a vow since then to keep reading great writing. And to try to live
up to their standard.
