Life of a
Writer Mom Column
April 2004 Column
A Journalist's Kid
by Carla Charter
Time marches on and unbelievably it seems to me,
my youngest has taught himself to read. Following in his older siblings
footsteps, he too is well on his way to becoming a bookworm. Words like up,
down, the, and, cat and dog are now all part of his reading vocabulary.
Lest we not forget though, that this child is a journalist's kid. One that very
rarely sleeps through the night and yet still manages to rise at the crack of
dawn. When I write articles for the newspaper, he is often found curled up in my
lap with his favorite blanket.
As a result of this early morning ritual, my youngest can read other words too.
Word's that I'm afraid Dick and Jane never heard of. Selectmen, board of health,
fire chief and landfill are also words he can read. As are veto, voted and
deficit. I smile and others stare when I take him to town hall and he can tell
me which office the selectmen are in or whether the town clerk is upstairs or on
our floor.
My crazy hours, night meetings and deadlines are aspects of my job that my
children are used to. It's part of being a journalist's kid. As much as reading
the word selectmen or fire chief.
Carla Charter is mom to Samantha (12), Halden
(5), and Mathew (4). In addition to being a mom, Carla is a freelance writer
specializing in newspaper and magazine journalism. Among her publication credits
are Woman's World, American Indian Report and New England
Business Journal. Online she has been published in Scubasource.com and
Military.com. She teaches creative writing courses at Mount Wachusett Community
College in Gardner, Ma. Recently her novel Across Lots has been
serialized at
