Life of a Writer Mom Column June 2004 Column Technology Battles There are many distractions for writers. Especially for those of us who work from home. With kids and errands and housework, it's amazing we find time to write at all. One of my biggest challenges isn't my to do list. It's that tempting to don't list. My writing space, you see is not in a separate office, but right in the middle of technology avenue. A corner of the living room. When I sit down to write, the technology beckons me, tempting me away from what I know I should be doing. After all, I reason, I've been working all day, taking care of children and the house, why shouldn't I take five minutes to catch the news? Of course five minutes turns into 45 or 50 minutes because I notice my favorite sit-com is on right after the news. And while my computer's warming up, I might as well give it another try. See if this time I can beat the kid's computer game. And when I don't, I get infuriated with the fact that a kid's computer game can beat me, so I vow to keep trying until I win. Then there's the telephone. Messages need to be checked and calls should be returned. And by the time I return the calls and answer the messages the children are home from school. Yet still somehow I write. Often by not even letting myself start down the technology road. Knowing where it will eventually lead. Instead I relish in the few quiet moments I have, technology free, to write. Carla Charter is mom to Samantha (12), Halden (5), and Mathew (4).
