Life of a Writer Mom Column I'm Not the Only One Writing is a solitary business. A
pen and paper and you. That's why I like meeting other writers so much.
Listening to their stories, hearing about their challenges, knowing that I'm not
the only one. I meet other writers in many places. Writer's conferences yes, but also grocery store lines, interviews and book racks. We seem to have an aura around us, the writers of the world. An aura that other writers recognize immediately. We start talking and before we know
it 45 minutes have passed. We exchange e-mails knowing that the address might be
a needed lifeline of encouragement when the words slow to a trickle. After my speech, a child came up to me and said she enjoyed my talk, especially my story about recess as a child. "I thought I was the only one who was like that." "No," I said, "not by a long shot." Carla Charter is mom to Samantha (12), Halden (5), and Mathew (4). In addition to being a mom, Carla is a freelance writer specializing in newspaper and magazine journalism.
