Life of a Writer Mom Column Bribing My Way to Deadlines by Carla Charter Summertime and the deadlines are looming. Not only that but I've got interviews to do. Meanwhile I have one child whining about being bored and two others bickering their way through the summer. All in the space where I'm playing a serious game of beat the deadline. Whoever said writing from home was easy? So I pull the ace card out of my pocket. Whether we admit it or not we've all, I suspect, used it. It's the dreaded "B" world. Bribery. I try other ploys before I resort to an out and out bribe. There's sympathy, "please guys I'm trying to work here." Silence for a second, then the chant, "but he took my truck," mantra returns. The din gets louder from there. Then there's reminding them of the time constraints. "People I have exactly 10 minutes to get this article to my editor." Then the, "But I've been bored longer than that," whine begins. The boys help out by adding the bicker background sound. Okay, I decide, I have no other choice. "Everyone outside," I say with a slight grin, "Let me finish this article and I'll take you to the beach this afternoon." Their eyes light up, sneakers fly and sudden silence preceded by slamming doors, descends over the house. The article is done in five minutes and I even set up two interviews for the next day. The beach beckons and as we pack up, I fill my writing bag with my novel notebooks. There's no rest for those of us who write from home. Chalk up one more deadline met through my secret weapon. Bribery. Carla Charter is mom to Samantha (12), Halden (5), and Mathew (4). In addition to being a mom, Carla is a freelance writer specializing in newspaper and magazine journalism. Among her publication credits are Woman's World, American Indian Report and New England Business Journal. Online she has been published in Scubasource.com and Military.com. She teaches creative writing courses at Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner, Ma. Recently her novel Across Lots has been serialized at http://www.newenglandwow.com.
