Life of a Writer Mom Column
Reminders by Carla Charter I think as writers we all have little reminders in our office. Things that keep us going when we feel like giving up on our crazy dreams. Whether it be a quote, or a letter or an award. It's always there to remind us to move forward. For me it's a typewriter. The typewriter sits quietly under my desk, waiting, I think for the computer to fail. A gift from my grandmother who I shared a writing passion with. Stories, poems, hers and mine, were always being shared between our two person writer's group. She purchased it for me when I first began toying with the idea of a freelance career many years ago. Since that day, my writing has grown, and my grandmother has passed away. I have graduated from the typewriter to a computer with a modem. Yet still there are the days when I get stuck. I want to give up this writing a book idea and get a regular job. One where I can get a few more hours of sleep, I grumble. About that time, my eyes fall on the typewriter. I take it out and lovingly place it on the kitchen table and begin to tap away. My passion for writing quickly returns, and I scoff at the idea of ever giving up my quest for a best seller. Not when I have a gift from a grandmother who believed in me and my writing so solidly. And as I put the typewriter away and get back to work, I know somewhere she is smiling, assured that I am staying where I belong, writing. Carla Charter is mom to Samantha (12), Halden (5), and Mathew (4). In addition to being a mom, Carla is a freelance writer specializing in newspaper and magazine journalism. Among her publication credits are Woman's World, American Indian Report and New England Business Journal. Online she has been published in Scubasource.com and Military.com. She teaches creative writing courses at Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner, Ma. Recently her novel Across Lots has been serialized at http://www.newenglandwow.com.
