Life of a Writer Mom Column
Composite Characters by Carla Charter While working on a new character with a bit of an attitude, I started musing on how all these diverse characters can come from one person. I've decided there is some part of our creative mind that is like a large sponge. Whether we realize it or not, every person we've met and every place we've been become absorbed into this creative sponge, without us even realizing it. The memories and emotions of what we've absorbed lie dormant until just the right time. Then they appear almost magically—a fragment of a person or place—come forth for the right character or the right story. And sometimes, we don't know where the fragment has come from, it just appears. We're just grateful it's there. If we looked though, our characters would have pieces of schoolmates, friends and others we have known. Scheming Isaac, kind hearted Samuel, and book worm Emma, all contain a piece of somebody I've met. Even my most recent character, Violet, a lady with an attitude and a story to tell. My characters are all as diverse as my life. So as I keep writing, I take time too: Time to expose myself to life and to new people, places and conversations. And ultimately new characters and stories as well. Carla Charter is mom to Samantha (12), Halden (5), and Mathew (4). In addition to being a mom, Carla is a freelance writer specializing in newspaper and magazine journalism. Among her publication credits are Woman's World, American Indian Report and New England Business Journal. Online she has been published in Scubasource.com and Military.com. She teaches creative writing courses at Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner, Ma. Recently her novel Across Lots has been serialized at http://www.newenglandwow.com.
