Life of a Writer Mom Column
Gifts For Writers by Carla Charter It's the holiday season, and all of you out there who have writers on your gift list are scratching your heads. Oh no! What do I get the writer? I'm here to tell you we're not that hard to buy for. In fact the simpler the better. First, remember writers are readers. Our eyes light up when we go into bookstores. I for one like to keep up on the new authors, especially in the area I write in, historical fiction. Then there's the new writing books out there. If I'm thinking of trying to write in a new genre, this is the perfect time to get a how to book. I joke, that when it comes to gifts, my husband has it easy. A gift certificate to a bookstore and a bag of chocolate. I'm happy for the year. A day off or even a morning off from the routine is wonderful for most of us. Someone taking the kids and saying, "go somewhere and write," is a dream to us, especially when we come home to find a spotless house—that our mate cleaned—and sleeping children, our year is made. Think funky. Pink fuzzy slippers, an out of the ordinary hat, a piece of apparel that screams, I am a writer and proud of it, always appeals to me. Something fun to write in. My daughter is always teasing me that because I'm an author I should write in a pink bathrobe with pink fuzzy slippers and eat bonbons all day. One year as a joke she bought me the bonbons. Passes and gift certificates to museums and restaurants are great too. While most people go to these places to eat or enjoy the artwork, writers are natural people watchers. Where other people notice their surroundings we notice the people we're surrounded by. Characters abound around every corner. Scenes for our next novel scream to us. Then there is the best gift that costs nothing. Support. Listen to our words, be proud of our profession and smile at being able to be on the crazy creative trip we writers call "writing." Carla Charter is mom to Samantha (12), Halden (5), and Mathew (4). In addition to being a mom, Carla is a freelance writer specializing in newspaper and magazine journalism. Among her publication credits are Woman's World, American Indian Report and New England Business Journal. Online she has been published in Scubasource.com and Military.com. She teaches creative writing courses at Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner, Ma. Recently her novel Across Lots has been serialized at http://www.newenglandwow.com.
