Life of a Writer Mom Rediscovering the Joy of Writing Does anyone else out there remember writing in second grade? I'm not talking about penmanship, I'm talking more about those stolen moments when you worked on a story in free time. Or secretly when you were supposed to be finishing your math. Writing then for me was like eating candy. I could never get enough of it. Knowing the world I created was mine alone. I still feel much the same way today. Writing has and will always be my passion. However finding those moments these days gets harder and harder. There's wash, and children and housework and deadlines. That's why there's a new resolution on my list this year. After eating right (Hey I'm a journalist, Dunkin Donuts is my second home!) and exercising (we all try on this one), there will be another. Marking out an hour a day to write for the fun of it. A project that is not written to be critiqued or is on a deadline. One that I work on simply for the sheer joy of putting a pen to paper. Creating characters that make me curious about where the story will lead. Therein, I've found, you rediscover your passion for writing—writing for the sheer excitement. Writing to discover new characters, and to laugh and cry along with them. And as the fun of all this writing stuff is rediscovered, the passion for the pen that we all feel, spills over into all the other deadline writing projects in our life. And somewhere as I put my pen down I swear I smell desks and chalkboards and I'm in second grade all over again. Carla Charter is mom to Samantha (12), Halden (5), and Mathew (4).
