Life of a
Writer Mom Column
Making Progress
by Carla Charter
Before I even knew it myself I was a storyteller.
From elementary school on, that pen and paper were always in my hand. I often
joke with my family, that with both Celtic and Gypsy ancestry could I become
anything else but a writer?
The journey from being a storyteller to being a published novelist is quite the
climb though. So I decided when I started down this road that all I wanted to
see was progress. One step at a time is how I figure it. I knew becoming a best
selling author overnight didn't happen, well, overnight.
Sometimes the steps were big, like getting my first online novel published. And
sometimes they were small, like being a guest on a radio show. Each step though,
adding up to my larger goal, becoming a full time novelist.
Seeing progress, small though it was, was sometimes the only thing that kept me
writing toward the light at the top of the ladder. Sometimes I would see the
rungs on that ladder coming, and other times they showed up unannounced.
Recently a step up on the ladder appeared with the selling of my first online
novel, A Necessary Harvest. It felt like one of the bigger steps on that ladder.
And as I climb, it feels, the light at the top gets brighter and brighter.
So am I where I want to be? Not by a long shot. But I'm making progress every
day and to me that's all that really matters.
