The Fine Art of Editing by Carla CharterMany years ago when I began writing, I kept things simple. After completing a story I would give it a quick read through, spell check it and off it would go to the editor. Since then, I've discovered the fine art of editing. Spell check a piece, yes, but now I do much more. I read my rough draft twice even three times, minimum. Almost always I end up deleting something there, adding something here. Often I fix a fragment sentence or add more description or color. This editing process can make the work take longer. Sometimes it can take an hour or more for me to edit. So why edit? My son summed up the answer to that question perfectly. Understand that he is six and just learning to ride a bike with training wheels. After one of his riding attempts, he came inside in tears because he had fallen off the bike. I was just finishing editing a story. I took a break to wipe his tears, give him a hug and clean him up. I added yet another Bandaid to his scraped and bruised legs. Matthew does not give up easily. It was late in the afternoon so I
suggested, "why don't you take a break from the bike for He was heading back out the door as he said with a smile, "I can't, cause it just feels so good when I get it right." Soon he was back on the bike again and I was back at the keyboard. I smiled at my work, thinking of his comment. Matthew was right. It felt great when you got everything right.
