Life of a Writer Mom Column

Plan B

by Carla Charter

One thing I've discovered with this writer-mom job, is that it's always wise to have a Plan B in your back pocket.

Take the past month for example. My computer has decided to take a hiatus. No amount of button pushing, coaxing, cajoling or glaring at it has made it want to come back from wherever computers go on vacation. And after discussing my computer woes with several experts in the field, it looks like my computer may actually be headed towards a permanent retirement. With three children and a limited budget, what's a writer-mom to do?

Well, this is where Plan B kicks in. I'm lucky to be near Mount Wachusett Community College, which has computers available for community use. It may be a little more of a hassle getting out the door in the morning but I can still meet deadlines which is what really matters.

Plan Bs, I've discovered, work for the smaller dilemmas in life as well as the giant computer sized variety. Most moms are quite familiar with these smaller predicaments that require Plan Bs.

For example, the other night I went to bed early because I wanted to be rested before that big interview tomorrow—the one that took me a month to snag. As I drifted off to sleep my husband mentions he'll be going into work early tomorrow to pick up some overtime. "No problem," I drowsily reply, "it's a school day anyway."

Then the 2 a.m. doorway alarm sounds. "Mom, my tummy doesn't feel good." My eyes flip open at the words that foreshadow doom. As I follow my racing child into the bathroom, I'm already formulating my revised Plan B for the next day. "Thank goodness for Heywood Hospital and their sick child care," I mutter as I crawl back into bed with my sick child sleeping between my husband and I.

The next morning arrives and Plan B goes off without a hitch. I arrive at the interview a little less bright and chipper than I had originally planned, but I arrive. And despite everything else in my crazy writer-mom life, I once again meet my deadline. All thanks to Plan B.
