Life of a Writer Mom Column
A View from the Plateau We all have those days. The days when characters freeze or our story hits a big fat dead end, no matter how hard we try. We get stuck on a writing plateau of sorts. When this happens, I've discovered, it's a good time to turn around and enjoy the view. What view? You may think. I'm stuck, that's all I can see. If we really think about where we've come from though, we get a whole new perspective. For me, my writing roots began at the kitchen table, with a typewriter, some vague ideas for children's books and no idea what I was doing. Twelve years later, I'm a published e-novelist, with two awards under my belt and a couple of regular columns. My office has evolved from the kitchen table—where my work had to be cleared off before meals—to a corner of the living room where my work can stay spread out, although not for too long. You see plastic dinosaurs and school papers accumulate on the desk as fast as spider webs in my house. After admiring the view from where I am for a while, I realize the summit ahead that reaches into the clouds doesn't seem that high after all. So, I let out a sigh, open my notebook and begin my climb all over again. Carla Charter is mom to Samantha (12), Halden (5), and Mathew (4). In addition to being a mom, Carla is a freelance writer specializing in newspaper and magazine journalism.
