Life of a Writer Mom Column
Keeping Track of My Story People by Carla Charter
Then came the idea of an e-soap: an original soap opera for the Web. Not one or two main characters here, but rather a whole clan—a father with his own architectural firm and his five children. Of course, since it's a soap opera, all of the character brings their own back story with them, as well as their ulterior motives, dirty little secrets and skeletons in the closet. No longer can I track these characters in my mind considering the way their lives have intertwined into the major plot and all of the minor plots. So again, my writing presents me with a new challenge: keeping track of my characters. Index card plotting, I've discovered, is the answer. Each character has their own card listing their secrets, motives and which other characters they get along with and who they despise. Everything I could possibly need to know about the character is written down on the cards. With my characters laid out in front of me, right there in pen and card, I can organize, shuffle and discover new story lines that otherwise would never have occurred to me. I am reminded once again how writing is a neve-ending discovery. Carla Charter is mom to Samantha (12), Halden (5), and Mathew (4). In addition to being a mom, Carla is a freelance writer specializing in newspaper and magazine journalism. Among her publication credits are Woman's World, American Indian Report and New England Business Journal. Online she has been published in Scubasource.com and Military.com. She teaches creative writing courses at Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner, Ma. Recently her novel Across Lots has been serialized at http://www.newenglandwow.com.
