Life of a Writer Mom Column
Routine Adventures by Carla CharterSomething I've discovered about my muses is that they thrive on routine. I have become a firm believer in writing every day, no matter what. I do this consistently, even if I fear my story is at a dead end or I don't know how my next story will start. The simple act of putting the pen to paper every day seems to be the sirens call for my muses. They can't resist helping. Even if my first two pages of writing are stilted and stale, I've noticed by page number three, something seem to happen. The muses move in figuring that since I'm writing anyway, they should step in and see what they can do to help make the story flow. And flow it does, like ink from an expensive pen. When I begin, I wonder how I'll ever fill two pages. Once into my writing session, I wonder how I can ever stop as I fill page after page, regretting that I only have a limited time to work. I put my pen down with a sigh, as my daughter comes through the door after school. I place my notebook on the office shelf with a smile, knowing that my muse and I will meet again tomorrow and create a-one-of-a-kind exciting tale of adventure, intrigue or romance—all due to my everyday, writing routine. Carla Charter is mom to Samantha, Halden, and Mathew. In addition to being a mom, Carla is a freelance writer specializing in newspaper and magazine journalism. Among her publication credits are Woman's World, American Indian Report and New England Business Journal. Online she has been published in Scubasource.com and Military.com. She teaches creative writing courses at Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner, Ma. Recently her novel Across Lots has been serialized at http://www.newenglandwow.com.
