Life of a Writer Mom Column
Been There, Done That by Carla CharterI am an avid patron of our local library. And lately my books of choice have been biographies of other writers. Some biographies have been of newer authors, and others have had a book published that has become a classic. Whatever era they come from though, it always amazes me the startling similarities all writers have. Recently, I read a biography about Margaret Mitchell of Gone With the Wind fame. It was nice to see her as not a famous author who wrote the classic novel about the Civil War, but as a person with a pen, much like you and I. Her love of regional history, much like mine, was long standing and resonated within me. According to the book, at one point an author asked her if she was always going to write about Southern folks? Her reply was, "Yes, I don't know any other kind." Only then did I look at my own work and realize, consciously or not, they were all set in the North, probably for much the same reason. I knew no other place well enough to set the novels in. In an autobiography, Hemingway wrote about his years in Paris. While reading this book, I saw not the famous author of The Old Man and The Sea, but instead a writer much like myself, who wrote for newspapers to pay the bills even though the characters from his stories kept beckoning. And for those of us, myself included, that are writer moms, let's not forget Erma Bombeck and her writing. Just reading one of her earlier works reminds me that someone else has been where I am and survived. I learn much by reading other author's works, but I've discovered more by reading the story of their lives. Carla Charter is mom to Samantha, Halden, and Mathew. In addition to being a mom, Carla is a freelance writer specializing in newspaper and magazine journalism. Among her publication credits are Woman's World, American Indian Report and New England Business Journal. Online she has been published in Scubasource.com and Military.com. She teaches creative writing courses at Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner, Ma. Recently her novel Across Lots has been serialized at http://www.newenglandwow.com.
