Life of a Writer Mom Column
The Ease of Working from Home? by Carla CharterIt was a Sunday afternoon when I saw it on television: An infomercial about stock trading and how it could give you the opportunity to quit your job and have the ease of working from home. I had to laugh. Whoever said working from home was easy? Now don't get me wrong. I appreciate the opportunity to be there for my children when they need me. And yes, I love to write, but easy, I'm sorry, was never in the job description. Take the other night for example. I got home late from a meeting I was covering and had a very tight deadline. As I come in the door, I notice my 8-year-old insomniac is still up on the couch with the 16-year-old, watching television. The 9-year-old was faring a little better. He was at least headed for the shower and then to bed. I announce to anyone that would listen, to please give me a little time and patience as I am on a tight deadline. I'm not sure if anyone heard me, the dog did lift his head momentarily and glance my way. With the computer on, I'm soon typing away, that is, until I feel my 8-year-old staring at me. "Yes," I smiled. Despite having a terrible day, I always have to smile when I see this child's face. "Can't sleep, need a lap," he calmly said. Well, I was sitting, so my lap was available. Back to work, now with the 8-year-old and the requisite stuffed dragon in my lap. I think to myself, "Do any other 'professionals' have to work this way? I'm almost done spell-checking the article, and ten minutes ahead of deadline when I hear the 9-year-old shower-taker saying, "Mom, why is the toilet overflowing?" I yell back, "Hold on. I'm almost done!" I send the article, move the now sleeping 8-year-old to bed, and become, as my 16-year-old remarked that night, "Super Plunger Mom." That night as I drifted off to sleep the infomercial popped back into my head. The ease of working from home? Yeah right! Carla Charter is mom to Samantha, Halden, and Mathew.
