Life of a Writer Mom Column
I Have an ISBN!
My daughter turned from the book she was reading and said, "What is it?" "I have an ISBN. I actually have an ISBN for my book!" "Yes, sure, whatever," said my daughter, as she turned back to her book. Now it's not that my daughter wasn't excited for me, it's just that I've been acting like this since I found out A Necessary Harvest had a publisher. My "someday when I publish a book" dream has suddenly become a reality. I find myself writing prefaces and acknowledgments that a month ago I wasn't even thinking about―and with every word, I have goosebumps. It's as if I am walking through a dream that I have had since childhood. I wander around my house muttering to any family who will listen, including the pets, "I'm writing a preface. Can you actually believe I'm writing a preface for my book?" So, over the last couple of days I can be found starting every conversation with, "I have an ISBN. Can you believe my book has an ISBN?" Family members, the pets, total strangers, it doesn't matter, because the conversation always starts the same way. And whenever I think I've adjusted to this new chapter in my writing life, something else happens to make me walk around in an awed daze. I am amazed at how far I've come and wonder where my writing dream will take me next. Carla Charter is mom to Samantha, Halden, and Mathew.
